PANCHATANTRA STORIES

A. The Owl And The Crow.

story book

Long ago, a huge banyan tree in a forest was the capital of crows. Thousands of crows lived on it. The king of crows, Meghavarna, also lived on the same tree.

There was a hill near the banyan tree, which had innumerable caves. Owls lived in those caves, their king was Arimardan. Arimardan was a very mighty king. He had declared crows as the number one enemy of owls. He hated crows so much that he would not eat food without killing a crow.

When many crows started being killed, their king Meghavarna became very worried. He called a meeting of crows to consider this problem. Meghavarna said, “My dear crows, you know that our life has become unsafe due to the attacks of owls. Our enemy is powerful and also arrogant. We are attacked at night. We cannot see at night. “We are not able to retaliate during the day because they remain safe in the darkness of the caves.” Then Meghavarna asked the wise and intelligent crows to give their suggestions.

A timid crow said, “We should compromise with the owl.” Whatever conditions he puts forward, we should accept them. What is the point in getting beaten by an enemy stronger than you?”

Many crows protested by cawing. A hot-headed crow shouted “We must not talk to those wicked people. Everyone get up and attack them.”

A pessimistic crow said, “The enemies are strong. We should leave this place.”

The wise crow advised, “It would not be right to leave your home. If we leave here, we will be completely devastated. We should stay here and take help from the birds.”

The most clever and intelligent crow among the crows was Sthirjeevi, who was sitting quietly and listening to everyone’s arguments. King Meghavarna turned towards him “Sir, you are silent. I want to know your opinion.”

Sthirjeevi said, “Maharaja, if the enemy is more powerful then we should use deceitful tactics.”

The king said “What kind of strategy? Please tell me clearly, Sthirajivi.”

Sthirjeevi said, “You call me good or bad and attack me fatally.”

Meghavarna was startled, “What are you saying Sthirajivi?”

Sthirjeevi and the king went to the cloudy branch and whispered into his ear, “We will have to do this drama for the sake of deceit. Owl spies in the trees around us are watching all the proceedings of our meeting. By showing them we will have to create a drama of division and conflict. After this, you take all the crows and go to Rishyamook mountain and wait for me. I will join the group of owls and collect materials for their destruction. I will destroy their Lanka by becoming a piercer of the house.”

Then the drama started. Sthirjeevi shouted, “Do as I say, O king,.” Why are you bent on getting us killed?”

Meghavarna screamed, “Traitor, how dare you speak so rudely to the king?” Many crows shouted together, “Kill this traitor.”

King Meghavarna thrashed Sthirjeevi with his wing and knocked him down and announced, “I am expelling the traitor Sthirjeevi from the crow society. From now on no crow will have any relation with this scoundrel.

The eyes of the owl spies hiding in the nearby trees sparkled. The spies informed the king of the owls that there was a division among the crows. Fighting and abuse are taking place. On hearing this, the commander of the owls said to the king, “Maharaja, this is the opportunity to attack the crows. This time we will defeat them easily.”

Arimardan, the king of owls, found the commander’s advice correct. He immediately ordered an attack. Just then, an army of thousands of owls started attacking the banyan tree. But not a single crow was found there.

How to even get it? As per the plan, Meghavarna had marched towards Mount Rishyamook with all the crows. Finding the tree empty, the King of the Owls spat, “The crows ran away instead of facing us. There was a thousand blows on such cowards.” All the owls started announcing their victory by making ‘hoo hoo’ sounds. The stationary crow lying in the bushes below was watching all this. Sthirjeevi made the sound of ‘kaan-kaan’. Seeing him, the spy owl said, “Hey, this is the same crow whom their king was pushing and humiliating.”

The king of owls also came. He asked, “How did you get into this predicament?” Sthirjeevi said, “I was the policy minister of King Meghavarna. I gave him good advice that the owls were currently being led by a mighty king. We should accept the subordination of owls. Hearing my words, Meghavarna became angry and rebuked me and threw me out of the caste of crows. Take me under your shelter.”

Arimardan, the king of owls, was lost in thought. His wise policy advisor whispered in his ear, “King, one should not believe what the enemy says. This is our enemy. Kill it.” A sycophant minister said, “No, Maharaj! There will be great benefit in joining this crow with you. It will tell us the secrets of the crows’ house.”

The king also saw the benefit in joining Sthirjeevi with himself, so the owl took Sthirjeevi crow with him. There Arimardan told the owl servants, “Stay Sthirjeevi in the royal guest room of the cave. They should not suffer any pain.”

Sthirjeevi said with folded hands, “Maharaj, you have given me shelter, that is enough. Let me remain like a servant on a stone outside your royal cave. My only desire is to sit there and keep singing your praises.” In this way Sthirjeevi camped outside the royal cave.

The policy advisor in the cave again said to the king “Maharaj! Don’t trust the enemy. Giving him a place in your house is tantamount to committing suicide.” Arimardan looked at him angrily “Don’t try to explain too much policy to me. If you want, you can leave from here.” Policy advisor Owl along with his two-three friends went from there forever saying “Disastrous contrary wisdom.”

owl and crow lesson

After a few days, Sthirjeevi brought wood and started keeping it near the entrance of the cave, “Sarkar, winter is coming. I want to build a hut made of wood to protect myself from the cold.’ Gradually, a huge pile of wood accumulated. One day, when all the owls were sleeping, Sthirjeevi flew from there and reached straight to Mount Rishyamook, where the clouds were waiting for him along with the crows. Sthirjeevi said, “Now all of you pick up one burning stick in your beak from the nearby forest where there is a fire and follow me.”

The army of crows reached the caves of the owls with Sthirjeevi holding burning sticks in their beaks. The wood piled up by Sthirjeevi was set on fire. All the owls died from burns or suffocation. King Meghavarna gave Sthirjeevi the title of Crow Jewel.

Lesson: Giving shelter to the enemy in your home is preparing material for your own destruction.

B. Strength of Unity

PIGEON

Once upon a time, a group of pigeons were flying in the sky in search of food. By mistake, the group went astray and passed through a region where there was a severe famine. The leader of the pigeons was worried. The pigeons were losing strength. It was necessary to get some food soon. The young pigeon of the group was flying lowest. He was the one who had to inform the rest of the group when he saw food.

After flying for a long time, he came out of the drought-stricken area. When greenery started appearing below, there was hope of getting food. The young pigeon started flying further down. Then he saw a lot of grain scattered in the field below, “Uncle, there is a lot of grain scattered in a field below. We will all be fed.’

PIGEONS ARE EATING ON THE GROUND

As soon as Sardar received the information, he ordered the pigeons to come down and collect the grains scattered in the field. The whole group came down and started collecting grains. In fact, that grain had been scattered by a bird hunter. His net was on the trunk of the tree above. As soon as the pigeon group started gathering grains, the net fell on them. All the pigeons got trapped.

The leader of the pigeons beat his head, “Oh! This was a trap spread to trap us. Hunger had clouded my intelligence. I should have thought that there was some point in having so much food scattered.

One pigeon started crying, “We will all be killed.” The rest of the pigeons had lost courage, but the Sardar was deep in thought. Suddenly he said, “Listen, it is true that the net is strong, but it is not strong enough to defeat the power of unity. If we combine all our strength, we can avoid death.”

The young pigeon fluttered “Uncle! Tell me clearly what you want to say. The net has broken us, how can we regain strength?” The chief said, “All of you hold the net with your beaks, then when I say fast, fly together with great force.”

Everyone did the same. Just then the trapper was seen coming. His eyes sparkled after seeing the pigeon trapped in the net. He held the stick in his hand firmly and ran towards the net. The fowler was just a short distance from the net when the leader of the pigeons said, “Furrrrr!”

a group of pigeon are flaying

When all the pigeons flew together with great force, the entire net rose up into the air and all the pigeons started flying with the net. The fowler was left speechless after seeing the pigeons flying with the net. When he regained his composure, he started running after the net. When the pigeon chief saw the fowler running after the net, he understood his intention. The Sardar also knew that it would not be possible for the pigeon group to keep flying with the net for long. But Sardar had a solution for this. His friend, a mouse, lived in a hole on a nearby hill. The chief ordered the pigeons to fly quickly towards that hill. As soon as they reached the hill, after receiving the signal from the chieftain, the pigeons along with the net landed near the rat hole.

The chief called out to his friend the mouse. The Sardar briefly narrated the whole incident to the rat and asked him to cut the net and free them. Within some time the rat cut the net. The chief thanked his friend the mouse and the entire pigeon group started flying towards the sky to freedom.

The moral of this story:  if we stay together then no one can defeat us. Unity is strength.

C. A True Friend

It was a long time ago. Four friends lived in a beautiful green forest. One of them was a rat, the second a crow, the third a deer and the fourth a tortoise. Despite being from different castes, there was a lot of closeness between them. All four used to sacrifice their lives for each other. All four lived together, talked and played a lot. There was a lake of clear water in the forest, in which the tortoise lived. There was a big blackberry tree near the banks of the lake. The crow used to live in its nest built there. A rat lived in a hole in the ground under the tree and a deer lived nearby in the dense bushes. During the day, the turtle would bask in the sun in the sand of the beach and take a dip in the water. The remaining three friends would go out in search of food and would travel far and return at sunset. The four friends would gather and hug each other, play and make noise. One day in the evening the rat and the crow returned, but the deer did not return. The three friends sat and started waiting for him. He didn’t even feel like playing. The tortoise said with a choked voice, “He used to return earlier than both of you every day. Don’t know what happened today that hasn’t come yet. My heart is sinking. The rat said in a worried tone, “Yes, the matter is very serious. Surely he is in some trouble. What do we do now?” Looking up, the crow opened its beak, “Friends, wherever he usually goes to graze, I would have flown and seen there, but it is getting dark. Nothing will be visible below. We will have to wait till morning. As soon as the morning comes, I will fly and bring you some news about it.” The tortoise nodded, “How will you sleep at night without knowing the well-being of your friend? How will the heart find peace? I will start walking in that direction now, my pace is also very slow, both of you come in the morning.” The mouse said, “Even I will not be allowed to sit idle. I can also go with the turtle brother, crow brother; you leave as soon as the dawn breaks.”

The tortoise and the mouse left. The crows spent the night eye-to-eye. As soon as dawn broke, the crow started flying and kept looking around. Further ahead, he saw a tortoise and a rat going to a place. The crow crowed and informed them that he had seen them and was going ahead in search. Now the crow also started calling the deer, “Friend deer, where are you? Give voice to me friend.” Then he heard someone crying. The voice was like that of his friend the deer. Flying in the direction of that voice, he went straight to the place where the deer was frolicking trapped in a hunter’s net. The deer cried and told how a cruel hunter had laid a trap there. Unfortunately he could not see the net and got trapped. The deer sobbed, “The hunter will definitely come, he will catch me and take me away and consider my story over.” Friend crow! You also say my last greetings to the rat and the turtle.” The crow said, “Friend, we will rescue you even at the cost of our lives.” The deer expressed disappointment, “But how will you do that?” The crow flapped its wings, “Listen, I will bring my friend rat on my back. He will gnaw the net with his sharp teeth.” The deer saw a ray of hope. His eyes lit up, “So friend, bring brother rat quickly.”

a true friend2

The crow flew and quickly reached where the tortoise and the rat had arrived. Without wasting any time the crow said, “Friends, our friend the deer is trapped in the trap of an evil hunter. Our lives are at stake, if we don’t rescue him before the hunter arrives, he will be killed.” The tortoise stammered, “What do we have to do for that?” Tell me quickly?” The rat’s sharp mind had understood the crow’s signal, “Don’t panic. Brother crow, carry me on your back and take me to the deer.” It didn’t take long for the rat to gnaw through the net and free the deer. As soon as he was free, the deer hugged his friends and thanked them with tears in his throat. Just then the tortoise also reached there and joined in the joy. The deer said, “Friend, you have also come. I am lucky to have such true friends.”

All four friends became emotional and started dancing in happiness. Suddenly, the deer got startled and warned his friends, “Brothers, look, that cruel hunter is coming. Hide immediately.” The rat immediately entered a hole nearby. The crow flew and sat on a high branch of the tree. In one jump the deer entered the nearby bush and disappeared. But the slow turtle could not even take two steps when the hunter came. Seeing the net cut, he beat his head, “What was trapped and who cut it?” To find out, he was looking around for clues of footprints when his eyes fell on a crawling turtle. His eyes lit up “Wow! Just the loincloth of a fleeing thief. Now this turtle will be used for my family’s meal today.”

He simply picked up the turtle, put it in his bag, collected the net and started walking. The crow immediately called the deer and the mouse and said, “Friends, our friend is carrying the hunter in a tortoise bag.” The mouse said, “We must free our friend.” But how?”

This time the deer suggested a solution to the problem, “Friends, we have to play a trick. I will pass the hunter limping. Seeing that I am lame, he will leave the bag containing the turtle and run after me to catch me. I will trick him by taking him away. Meanwhile, brother rat will gnaw the bag and free the turtle, that set.

The plan was good and the hunter was happy to see the limping deer. He threw the bag and ran after the deer. The deer pretended to lame him and took him towards the dense forest. The hunter kept grinding his teeth. Now when he returned with the intention of managing the work with the tortoise, he found the bag empty. There was a hole in it. The hunter returned home empty handed.

Lesson: If you have true friends, you can easily face problems in life.

D. Enemy's Advice

There was a huge tree on the river bank. A large flock of herons lived on that tree. A black snake used to live in a groove of the same tree. When the babies would come out of the eggs and when they would grow up and start living away from their parents, only then would that snake eat them. In this way, the black snake had been snatching away the heron babies for years. Even the herons did not want to leave that place because there were plenty of turtles in the river. The herons liked the soft flesh of the turtles very much. This time, when the snake started grabbing a child, the father heron caught sight of it. The heron came to know that the snake must have been eating its earlier children also. He felt very sad. A tortoise saw him shedding tears and asked, “Uncle, why are you crying?” In grief, the creature starts crying its pain in front of everyone. He told about the snake and his dead children and said, “I want to take revenge from him.”

The turtle thought, “Well, uncle is crying in grief. When our children eat this, we don’t even think about how sad we feel. If you want to take revenge from the snake then we would also like to take revenge from you.” The heron had made the mistake of telling his sorrow to his enemy. The clever tortoise had thought of a plan to kill two birds with one stone. He said “Mama! I suggest you a very good way to take revenge.”

The heron asked in an impatient voice, “Tell me quickly, what are those solutions?” I will not forget your favor throughout my life.’ The tortoise smiled in his heart and started telling the solution, ‘There is a mongoose hole some distance from here. Mongoose is the worst enemy of snake. Mongooses like fish very much. You catch small fishes and spread them from the mongoose’s hole to the snake’s cavity. The mongoose will eat the fish and reach the snake and kill it.’ The heron said, “Please show me the mongoose’s hole.

The tortoise showed the mongoose’s hole to the heron. The heron did as the tortoise explained. The mongoose actually reached the snake’s whole while eating the fishes. As soon as the snake saw the mongoose, it hissed. In a short fight the mongoose broke the snake into pieces. The heron jumped with joy. The turtle said in his mind, “This is just the beginning, you foolish heron. Now my revenge will begin and all you herons will be destroyed.”

The turtle’s thinking turned out to be correct. The mongoose did not leave from there after killing the snake. He saw herons all around him, delicious food for him for months. The mongoose settled in the same cavity in which the snake lived and started making a heron its prey every day. In this way all the herons were killed one by one.

Lesson: The enemy’s selfishness is hidden in his advice.

E. The Wise Swan

wise swan

There was a very big tree. Many swans lived on it. Among them was a very wise swan, intelligent and very far-sighted. Everyone used to respect him and call him ‘Dada’. One day he found a small vine wrapped very low on the tree trunk. Dada called the other swans and said, “Look, destroy this vine otherwise one day will come this vine take us all to death.” A young swan said laughingly, “Dada, how will this small vine take us to death?”

The wise swan explained, “Today she seems small to you. Gradually it will wrap around the entire trunk of the tree and reach the top. Then the stem of the vine will start becoming thick and will stick to the tree, and then a ladder will be formed to climb the tree from bottom to top. Any hunter will climb up the stairs and reach us and we will be killed.”

The second swan could not believe it, “How can a small vine become a ladder?”

The third swan said, “Dada, you are stretching a small vine and making it longer.”

A swan murmured, “Hey dear listen to uncle, making up a story to show off his intelligence.”

But no one took uncle’s words seriously. Where did they have the intelligence to see so far?

wise swan

Time kept on passing by the vine reached the branches above, clinging tightly to itself. The trunk of the vine began to thicken and a staircase literally formed on the trunk of the tree. Which could be climbed easily. Everyone started seeing the truth of uncle’s words. But now nothing could be done because the vine had become so strong that it was not possible for the swans to destroy it.

One day when all the swans had gone out to feed, a hunter came by. As soon as he saw the stairs on the tree, he climbed the tree, laid a net and went away. When all the swans returned in the evening and landed on the tree, they got badly trapped in the hunter’s net. When they got caught in the net and started fluttering, then they came to know about the wisdom and foresight of Dada. Everyone was ashamed of not obeying uncle’s words and was cursing themselves. Dada was annoyed and silent.

One swan courageously said, “Dada, we are fools, but don’t turn your back on us now.”

The second swan said, “Only you can tell us the trick to get us out of this crisis.” We will obey everything you say. All the swans agreed, and then uncle told them, “OK listen to me carefully. When the Fowler comes in the morning, pretend to be dead. The Fowler will consider you dead and will take you out of the net and keep you on the ground. Remain lying there like dead. As soon as he puts the last swan down, I will whistle. Everything will fly away as soon as you hear my whistle.

The Fowler came in the morning. Swan did as uncle had explained. In fact, the Fowler considered the swans dead and threw them on the ground. With the sound of the whistle all the swans flew away. The Fowler kept looking speechless.

Lesson: Wise advice should be taken seriously.

F. The Weaver & The Camel.

the weaver and the camel

Once upon a time there a weaver lived in a village. He was very poor. She got married in her childhood itself. After the arrival of his wife, the household expenses had to increase. This worry consumes him. Then there was famine in the village. People became poor. The weaver’s income ended completely. He had no other option but to go to the city. He did odd jobs in the city for a few months. A little money came into the pocket and when news came from the village that the famine was over, he started towards the village. On the way, he saw a camel at one place on the roadside. Female Camel looked ill and was pregnant. He felt pity on the camel. He brought that female camel with him to his home. When the camel started getting proper fodder and grass at home, she became completely healthy and when the time came, she gave birth to a healthy camel. The baby camel proved to be very lucky for him. After a few days, an artist came to the same village to paint a picture of village life. To make painting brushes, he would come to the weaver’s house and take hair from the tail of a baby camel. After staying in the village for about two weeks, the artist left after painting.

Here the camel started giving a lot of milk and the weaver started selling it. One day the artist returned to the village and gave a lot of money to the weaver, because the artist had won many awards with those paintings and his paintings were sold at good prices. The weaver started considering that baby camel as the star of his luck. With some of the money he received from the artist, he bought a beautiful bell for the camel’s neck and put it on. Thus the days of the weaver ended. One day he convinced and brought his bride also.

The happiness that came in the weaver’s life due to the arrival of camels made the weaver wish to leave the weaver’s business and become a camel trader. His wife also completely agreed with him. By now she too had become pregnant and was grateful to the camel and the baby camel for her happiness.

The weaver bought some camels. His camel business took off. Now the weaver had a large group of camels with him all the time. They were left to graze during the day. The baby camel, now a young camel, started ringing the bell with them.

One day another young camel, ask to the bell bearer, “Hey dear brother! Why do you stay away from us?” The bell bearer exclaimed with pride, “Impressive! You’re just a regular camel.”. I am the beloved of the bell ringer owner. I don’t want to lose my honor by joining camels inferior to me.”

A lion lived in the forest in the same area. The lion used to climb on a high stone and keep watching the camels. He saw a camel living isolated from other camels. When a lion attacks a herd of animals, he chooses only an isolated one. This work also became easier because of the bell ringer’s voice. Without seeing the eyes, he could wait for the sound of the bell.

The next day, when the group of camels was returning after grazing, the bell bearer was walking twenty steps behind the other camels. The lion was already sitting in ambush. Targeting the sound of the bell, he ran and hit it and dragged it into the forest. The ego of such a bell ringer made the bell ring his life.

Lesson: The ego of the one who thinks that he is the best soon sinks him.

G. The secrete of the Drum

Once there was a fierce battle between two kings near a forest. One won and the other lost. The armies returned to their cities. Only one army drum was left behind. By playing that drum, Bhandba Charan, who went with the army, used to narrate stories of bravery at night. One day after the war there came a storm. Due to the force of the storm, the drum started rolling and rested near a dry tree. The dry branches of that tree were stuck to the drum in such a way that whenever a strong wind blows, it would hit the drum and there would be a resonating sound of Dhamdham Dhamdham.

A jackal used to roam in that area. He heard the sound of the drum. He became very scared. He had never heard any animal making such a strange sound before. He started wondering what kind of animal is this, which speaks in such a loud voice ‘Dhamadham’. The jackal kept watching the drum secretly, to know whether this creature was going to fly or run on four legs.

One day the jackal was hiding behind a bush and keeping an eye on the drum. Just then a squirrel coming down from the tree jumped and landed on the drum. There was also a slight thudding sound. The squirrel kept munching on grains while sitting on the drum.

The jackal grumbled “Oh! So these are not violent creatures. “I shouldn’t be afraid either.”

The jackal walked towards the drum with heavy footsteps. Sniffed it. He could neither see the head nor the legs of the drum. Then the twigs hit the drum due to the gust of wind. There was a thumping sound and the jackal jumped and fell backwards.

dhol ke pol

“Now understood.” While trying to fly, the jackal said, “This is the outer shell. The living beings are inside this shell. The voices are telling that whatever creature lives inside this shell, it must be fat and fresh. Body full of fat. That’s why he utters a loud call of Dham=Dham.”

As soon as the jackal entered his den, he said, “O jackal! Get ready to eat the feast. I have come back after finding a big kill.”

The female jackal started asking, “Why didn’t you kill him and bring him back?”

The jackal rebuked him, “Because I am not a fool like you. He is hiding inside a shell. The shell is such that it has doors of dry skin on both sides. If I had tried to catch him by putting my hand from one side, would he not have escaped through the other door?

When the moon rose, both of them went towards the drum. When he was getting closer, the twigs hit the drum in the wind and a ‘dhum-dhum’ sound came out. The jackal whispered into the female jackal’s ear, “Did you hear her voice?” Just think, the one whose voice is so deep, how fat and fresh he himself must be.”

Both of them straightened the drum and sat on either side of it and started tearing the edges of both the skinned parts of the drum with their teeth. As soon as the skins started being cut, the jackal said, “Be careful. We have to put our hands together and catch the prey.” With the sound of ‘Hum’, both of them put their hands inside the drum and started groping inside. There was nothing inside. We held each other’s hands. Both shouted “Hai! There is nothing here.” And they remained there beating their heads.

Lesson: Those who boast are hollow inside like a drum.

H. The Tale of Gangadatta's Betrayal

The Tale of Gangadatta's Betrayal

Many frogs lived in a well. The name of their king was Gangadatta. Gangdutt was of very quarrelsome nature. There were two or three more wells nearby. Frogs lived in them too. The frogs of every well had their own king. Gangdutt kept quarreling with every king on some issue or the other. Due to his stupidity, he would start doing something wrong and if the intelligent frog tried to stop him, he would get beaten up by his fellow bullies as soon as he got the chance. The anger against Gangadatta was increasing among the frogs in the well. There was no respite from fights in the house too.

One day Gangadatta had a big fight with his neighbor the frog king. There was a lot of tu-tu me-me. Gangadatta came to his well and told that the neighboring king had insulted him. To avenge the insult, he ordered his frogs to attack the neighboring well. Everyone knew that the fight must have been started by Gangadatta. Some wise frogs and wise men united and said in one voice, “King, there are twice as many frogs as us in the neighboring well. They are healthier and stronger than us. We will not fight this battle.”

Gangdutt was stunned and shivered badly. In his mind he decided that these traitors would also have to be taught a lesson. Gangadatt called his sons and instigated them, “Son, the neighboring king has insulted your father. Go, beat the sons of the neighboring king so much that they start asking for water.”

Gangadatta’s sons started looking at each other. At last the elder son said, “Father, you never allowed us to tremble. Only by croaking the frogs gain strength, courage and enthusiasm. You tell me how will we be able to beat anyone without courage and enthusiasm?”

Now Gangdutt became irritated with everyone. One day, grumbling and grumbling, he came out of the well and started wandering here and there. He saw a fierce snake entering its hole nearby. His eyes sparkled. When you have become your enemy then you should make the enemy yours. Thinking this, he went to the hole and said, “Naagdev, my greetings.” Naagdev hissed, “Hey frog, I am your enemy. I eat you and you are calling me by coming in front of my hole.

Gangadatta growled, “O snake, sometimes your enemies give more pain than your enemies. My own caste members and relatives have insulted me so badly that to teach them a lesson I have to come to an enemy like you asking for help. You accept my friendship and have fun.”

The snake took its head out of the hole and said, “Have fun, how can you have fun?”

Gangadutt said, I will feed you so many frogs that you will turn into a python.

The snake expressed doubt, “I cannot go into water. How will I catch frog?”

Gangdutt clapped, “Naag brother, this is where my friendship will be useful to you. I have got secret tunnels dug by my spies, the frog, to keep an eye on the wells of the neighboring kings. His path leads to every well where the tunnels meet. There is a room, y ou stay there and eat whatever frogs I ask you to eat.”

The snake agreed to be friends with Gangadatta. Because his profit was the only profit in it. If a fool, blinded by the desire for revenge, is ready to hand over his own people to the enemy, then why should the enemy not take advantage of this?

The serpent went and sat in the tunnel room with Gangadatta. Gangadatta first asked all the neighboring frog kings and their subjects to eat. Within a few weeks, the snake went through the tunnels and ate the frogs of all the other wells. When everything was finished, the snake said to Gangadutt, “Whom should I eat now? Tell quickly. It has become a habit to keep the stomach full 24 hours a day.”

Gangadatt said, “Now eat all the frogs and intelligent frogs of my well.” After they were eaten, it was the turn of the people. Gangadatt thought, “The  people are so bad. She keeps complaining about something or the other all the time. After eating them, when the snake asked for food, Gangadutt said, “brother Nag, now only my family and my friends are left. Game over and the frog digested.”

The snake spread its hood and started hissing, “Frog, I am not going anywhere now. Now you make arrangements for food otherwise you will suffer.”

Gangdutt stopped speaking. He fed his friends to the snake and then his sons went into the snake’s stomach. Gangadatt thought that if I and the frog remain alive, we will give birth to more sons. Son, after eating, the snake hissed, “And where is the food? Gangadutt got scared and pointed towards the frog. Gangadatt explained to himself, “Let’s get rid of the old frog. I will marry a new young frog and establish a new world.”

After eating the frog, the snake mouthed “Eat.”

Gangadatt folded his hands, “Now only I am left. Your friend Gangdutt. Now go back.”

The snake said, “Do you look like my uncle?” and grabbed him.

Lesson: The one who joins the enemy to take revenge from his own people is sure to end.

I. A True Ruler

a true ruler

Sher Singh’s rule in Kanchan forest had ended, but without a king, the situation had become such that there was a jungle king who could do whatever he wanted. Unrest, killing and filth spread so much in the forest that it became difficult for animals to live there. Some animals were remembering Sher Singh that “as long as Sher Singh held the throne, there was so much peace and unity in the entire forest. If this continues like this, one day this forest will end and all of us animals will become homeless and die.”

Golu Bear said – “Some solution or the other will have to be done – why don’t we all unanimously choose a king of our own who will chain us again like Sher Singh and once again the sound of peace will echo in the forest.” ” Everyone was satisfied with Golu Bear’s words. But the problem was that who should be made the king? All the animals were claiming themselves to be greater than the others.

Sonu Mor said – “Why not give some work to everyone for a fortnight, then only the one who does his work in the best way will be made the king of this place.” Sonu agreed with Sweety and then all the animals were given work on the basis of their merit. Bimpy the fox was given the task of removing mud, Bholu the monkey was given the task of removing the webs from the trees, Soni the elephant was given the task of picking up stones and putting them in a pit and Monu the rabbit was given the task of cleaning the grass.

When a fortnight passed, all the animals gathered in a field with the details of their respective tasks. All the animals had completed their work with great cleanliness and hard work. Sonu was the only elephant who did not put even a single stone in the pit.

Now a problem again arose as to whose work should be considered the best. The wise rabbit Monu suggested, “Why not hold a vote, we will elect the one who gets the most votes as king.”

a true ruler

The election was held early the next morning and all the animals and birds gathered in a large field to vote. The counting of votes started one hour after the polling ended. What is this! Sonu Hathi was leading in the counting and when the counting of votes ended, Sonu Hathi emerged victorious with the highest number of votes. All the animals were staring at each other.

Then bird king Garun appeared there and addressed all the animals present and said – ‘Sonu the elephant used to go to the pit every day carrying stones, but when he saw that my eggs were kept in that pit, he did not put the stones in it but placed them on the ground nearby. Kept collecting. Sonu considered it more useful to save a living being than to give up his greed to become king.

Seeing his charitable spirit and seeing the spirit of the birds, we birds decided that only the one who leaves his greed and takes care of the happiness and sorrow of others has the right to become the true ruler and since the number of birds in the forest There were more animals than Sonu, so Sonu the elephant won the election.

‘ Lesson: A true ruler is the one who gives the highest place to the spirit of charity.

panchatantra story

The baby fox lived, ate, played with the lion cub and treated him like him. The lioness accepted the fox’s baby as her own and used to feed her milk to her children as well. Slowly two-three children started growing up. One day an elephant came near a cave, while roaming in the forest. Seeing the elephant, two lion cubs roared and rushed in front of it. Seeing the two lion cubs going in front of the elephant, the fox cub said to them, “Hey, don’t go in front of him, he is an elephant and he is very strong.” the elephant will kill you. Saying this, the fox child went away and stood up. Hearing the fox’s words, the two lion cubs turned back and went away. When the two lion cubs returned, they went to the fox and said to him, “You are a coward; we could not go there for you.

“The fox turned really mad and red when the lion cubs said mean things, and then it started yelling at them. Seeing the fight between them, the lioness started telling the fox that he is your younger brother, don’t get angry at him. After a lot of persuasion by the lioness, the fox got very angry and said, “I am courageous, I am intelligent”. They are making fun of me, I will kill them, I will repay them. After listening to the fox, the lioness said, “Child, I know you are very courageous, intelligent and beautiful, but because of the caste you are born in, you cannot hunt elephants.” It’s time to tell you the truth. Child, you are not a lion’s cubs, you are a fox’s cub, I have raised you by feeding you milk. And before my children come to know about this, you leave this place and go to your brother, otherwise my children will not let you live. Hearing these words of the lioness, the fox started trembling and from there, saving his life, quietly went into the forest and started living with his brother and friends. The fox child understood that if he stays with his brothers, his life will be saved.
